The CMS masters team placed 2nd in the Franklin Park 5K, as part of the 4th USATF New England Cross Country Grand Prix race and Mayor's Cup races. Host BAA won. Gregory Putnam and Tim Van Ordren were the one-two punch for CMS. Pawlicki, Nephew, and Verrington finished up the scoring. Stephen Trainor and Eric Narcisi competed in their first xc races for CMS in the 8k Championship Open race.

USATF New England Cross Country Championships Franklin Park

The Central Mass Striders Masters team placed 2nd in the USATF New England Masters Cross Country Championships (8 kilometers) held at Franklin Park. First place BAA had 35 points. CMS had 46 and 3rd place, Springfield Harriers had 97 points. A total of nine teams competed. Gregory Putnam led CMS with a 3rd place overall finish and a time of 26:52, just five seconds behind Chris Magill and three behind Peter Hamer. Tim Van Orden placed 6th overall with a time of 27:04. Alan Bernier and Joshua Perks were the next CMS runners to cross the finish line with times of 27:42 and 27:46 respectively. Todd Callaghan wrapped up the scoring for the masters team with a 14th place finish and a time of 27:55. James Pawlicki was 18th, Daniel Verrington (5th 50+) 26th, and John Gillis was (19th 50+) 57th.

Nate Jenkins finished 8th overall in the men’s Open race who raced the 10 kilometer course. He ran a time of 31:12.

Vassallo places 42nd at US Olympic Team Trials Marathon

Dan Vassallo ran 2:26:05 in the US Olympic Team Trials Marathon in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 13. Dan averaged 5:35 per mile pace as temperatures climbed into the 70's in the late morning. He placed 42nd out of 105 finishers while 61 runners started and did not finish.

Dan Vassallo wasted no time after the trials to win the Smuttynose Palooza 5K in Salisbury, MA. Meanwhile, several open, masters, and Seniors got on the oval at Harvard University for the USATF New England Indoor Track & Field Championships. The team placed five runners in the top twelve places in the 3000m. Scott Mindel and Pat Fullerton debuted for the CMS racing team. Scott broke his PR from high school. Also breaking a PR was Eric Narcisi who got under nine minutes with a 8:57.14. Nate Jenkins placed 3rdin the 5K in the morning. Seniors, Daniel Verrington and Dave Dunham ran their season’s best times.

CMS men kick off USATF New England Road Race Grand Prix

The CMS men's open team took the win over 21 teams at the An Ras Mor 5K in Cambridge, MA on Sunday. They were led by Nate Jenkins who placed 5th overall (14:51). Pat Fullerton, Dan Vassallo, Scott Mindel, and Scott Leslie wrapped up scoring as the top five for CMS. 7 men broke 16 minutes.

The CMS men's masters team placed 2nd overall. They were paced by Gregory Putnam and Jason Dunklee (16:03 and 16:04) which placed them 3rd and 4th 40+. Tim Van Orden, Arthur Besse, and Joe Shairs scored for the team. The Senior team placed 7th overall, led by Ernest Brake (11th 50+). Dave Dunham, John Gillis, David Lapierre, and Frank Ruggiero finished up the scoring.

The CMS men's team had 21 finishers, all listed below in blue. The men will be competing in the next Grand Prix race, New Bedford Half Marathon.

The Central Mass Striders men's masters team placed 2nd overall in the USATF National Masters 10K Championship in Dedham, MA - James Joyce Ramble. There were two races. The men's masters championship race started first. The open race started about five minutes later. Greg Putnam from Stoneham, MA led the way for the CMS masters team with a 3rd place finish. Tim Van Orden just missed breaking 34 minutes and placed 10th overall. Joshua Perks rounded out the scoring for CMS who had an average time of 34:14 between the three masters runners who finished behind BAA and ahead of the Atlanta Track Club in the 40+ USATF team scoring. All three teams have been on the podium several times since the race began to host the 10K championship. Joe Shairs and Dan Verrington (50+) both broke 36 minutes.

Meanwhile, the open men, did not have a team category to chase as the masters team did. However, CMS placed 4 men in the top 13 overall. Nate Jenkins and Dan Vassallo broke 31 minutes and placed 3rd and 4th respectively. Scott Mindel broke 31:30 and Eric Narcisi was well under 33 minutes. Kevin Gorman is back and healthy, breaking 36 minutes.

                         CMS had the top open, masters, and Senior teams in Huntington, VT within race # 1 of the USATF New England Mountain Series. Scoring teams (5 score for open, 3 score for all other age groups) from USATF New England included Acidotic Racing, North Medford Club, GMAA, Gate City Striders, and Central Mass Striders.

Matt Veiga led the open team with a 2nd place finish overall while Tim Van Orden placed 4th overall and 1st 40+ (master). Todd Callaghan and Andy McCarron were in the top 7 overall. Dave Dunham cruised to a 2nd place Senior finish and 23rd overall, just ahead of teammate Erik Vandendries by 3 seconds. Overall, CMS had 7 men in the top 24 overall.

The next race in the series is the Wachusett Mountain race, hosted by the Central Mass Striders on Memorial Day Weekend.
